Tin Pan Alley: America’s Golden Age of Song
Oct 14–Nov 4 (Wednesday evenings)
Attendance: 30
Tin Pan Alley … that magical time in the early 1900s when America’s greatest songwriters—Berlin, Kern, the Gershwins, Porter, and friends—were on top of their game. This course looks at the entrepreneurial frenzy of Tin Pan Alley in its start-up years, the hilarious and moving stories behind the songwriters and the songs, how ragtime and jazz set the stage for Tin Pan Alley, and what made the lyrics so sophisticated, delightful, and fun. Part of the Community Classroom Series.
