Almost Ready to Publish

Saturday, Nov 1, 9 am–1 pm. Course #2519.  Fee: $125. Enrollment limited to 20.

This workshop is for people who are looking to publish a novel, memoir, or a collection of stories, essays, or poems. We will look at how editors and agents will examine your book, and discover what, if anything, needs to be fine-tuned before you send your manuscript out. Each participant will learn how to format a particular manuscript, what kind of cover letter pitch will be effective for that work, and potential places to send it.

Instructor Richard Krawiec has published numerous books, one of which was nominated for a National Book Award. His young adult biography on Yao Ming was cited as one of the “40 Best” books of 2004 by the Pennsylvania Librarians Association. He has received Creative Writing Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the NC Arts Council.

Emotional Intelligence and Women in Public Service

Saturday, Nov 1, 9 am–1 pm. Course #2520.  Fee: $125.

Emotional intelligence is a learned ability that is needed to understand, use, and express human emotions. Leadership is the ability to influence the behavior, thoughts, and actions of others. While we are not individually accountable for other people’s feelings and growth, at a fundamental level these affect us and the outcomes we seek. If we want optimal results, people and their feelings will be critical to that success. Join us for this interactive presentation on women leaders in the public service arena and how they use emotional intelligence to enhance their effectiveness in office. Participants will identify the characteristics that make women successful in public service and consider their own capacity to serve in an arena where women are often underrepresented.

This workshop is taught by Heather Lee and Dana Jennings. Heather Lee holds a PhD in industrial/organizational psychology. She currently serves as a professor of human resources and psychology at Peace College. She has been involved as an instructor with the North Carolina Center for Women in Public Service since its inception in 2003. Dana Jennings holds an MA and  is the CEO of the North Carolina Center for Women in Public Service, a statewide, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that prepares women to seek and serve in elected and appointed offices throughout North Carolina.
