The Performing Arts Symposium brings University faculty together with visiting performing artists to lead an intellectual exploration of a performance’s underlying themes or issues. The fall 2006 Performing Arts Symposium, presented in partnership with Carolina Performing Arts and the Carolina Inn, explores cinematic artistry and the impact that technology and consumerism is having on artistic standards in cinema, music, and multimedia productions. |

Panelists:
Martine Antle, Professor of French, twentieth-century French studies
Kyle Gann, composer, new music critic for the Village Voice, and Associate Professor of Music, Bard College
Mark Katz, Assistant Professor, Department of Music
Daniel A. Reed, Chancellor’s Eminent Professor; Director, Renaissance Computing Institute; Vice Chancellor, Information Technology
Mikel Rouse, composer, director, and multimedia artist
Joyce Rudinsky, Associate Professor, Department of Communication Studies
The discussion will be moderated by Lawrence Grossberg, Morris Davis Distinguished Professor of Communication Studies and Cultural Studies, and director of the University Program in Cultural Studies.
Carolina Inn, 6–7:30 pm
Engage in informal discussion with Mikel Rouse and the other panelists over a banquet provided by the Carolina Inn. The menu for the evening includes soup, salad, and choice of three entrees, followed by a chef’s selection of cakes, pies, and sweets. Wine will be served.
The PerformanceMemorial Hall, 8–10 pm Co-commissioned by Carolina Performing Arts, The End Of Cinematics pays tribute to the movies while lamenting the decline of cinematic artistry. This dream-like, sensory experience features a hypnotic, surround-sound, pop-infused score, digital video shot on the streets of Paris, live actors, and live video on multiple screens. |

The registration fee is $100 and includes the symposium and dinner at the Carolina Inn, and the performance and reception at Memorial Hall.
Full refunds less a $25 administrative fee will be given to registrants who cancel one week prior to the event. No refunds will be made after that date. Substitutions are welcome.
