Use of the Friday Center

The Friday Center is available for use by all administrative and academic units of the University and by non-University organizations in cooperation with a unit of the University. The facility is intended for use by organizations rather than unaffiliated individuals.

All programs conducted at the Friday Center must meet the following criteria:

  • The program being offered must have a clearly identifiable continuing education component.
  • The program must be related to the teaching, research, and/or public service mission of the University.
  • The program must be intended primarily for an adult clientele.
  • The program must be sponsored, co-sponsored, or hosted by an administrative or academic unit of the University.

Programs must fall within one of the following categories:

  • Sponsored program. The primary responsibility for planning, conducting, and administering the program is held by a University administrative or academic unit.
  • Co-sponsored program. A University administrative or academic unit is jointly responsible, along with a non-University unit, for planning, conducting, and administering the program.
  • Hosted program. A University administrative or academic unit is responsible for assuring that all University guidelines for such activities are met, but a non-University unit is responsible for planning, conducting, and administering the program.

The Friday Center is not intended for use by regularly scheduled classes. On a space-available basis, University departments may conduct approved special functions at the Friday Center. Examples of approved events include retirement receptions, award ceremonies, memorial observances, and departmental holiday celebrations. Social events held in conjunction with University-related educational programs held at another location may also be scheduled at the Friday Center. Space for special and social events cannot be confirmed until sixty (60) days prior to the event.

As a University administrative unit, the Friday Center may serve as a program sponsor or host in accordance with the policies for use of the Center. All users of the Friday Center must agree to abide by University policies relating to matters of safety, liability, non-discrimination, non-disturbance, civil obedience, use of University grounds, and other relevant University policies.

Adverse Weather

In the event of adverse weather conditions, the Friday Center will make decisions about conference operations in a manner that best addresses the safety, convenience, and preferences of clients and conference attendees. If the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is closed due to adverse weather, the Friday Center will be closed as well and will notify clients accordingly. If the University remains open but conditions warrant, the Friday Center may delay opening, close early, or close operations entirely.

Sale of Materials

Materials (such as recordings, proceedings, or books) that are related to the program being conducted may be sold at the Friday Center. The sale of materials and items not related to a program is not permitted.

Exhibitors

Exhibitors who are part of an educational program are subject to approval by the University administrative unit sponsoring or hosting the program and by Center management. The Center retains the right to enforce guidelines regarding factors such as exhibit size and function.

Displaying Materials

If you need to hang or otherwise display instructional materials in a meeting room, please discuss appropriate display methods with Center staff prior to your meeting.

Liability

The Friday Center cannot assume responsibility for personal property and equipment. Liability for damage to the premises will be charged accordingly.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited in the building and within 100 feet of the exterior.

Fundraising

Organizations requesting to conduct fundraising activities in connection with educational events at the Friday Center must indicate this intention on the contractual agreement. Requests for fundraising activities will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Requests will be approved only if the proposed program meets all requirements for use of the Friday Center and is clearly in support of the educational purposes of the program. Activities may not be conducted at the Friday Center for personal financial gain.

Information for Your Participants

We suggest that your program announcements or confirmation materials include information about food services, schedules, and Friday Center facilities (including the fact that the building is smoke-free) so that your participants will know what to expect when they arrive at the Center.

After your Program

After your program ends, we ask that you remove all equipment and materials that do not belong to the Center. If you need to delay removal of your materials, please check with a Conference Services Coordinator, who will arrange for temporary storage.
