Credit Programs for Part-time Students

How to Apply

In order to enroll in a Part-time Classroom Studies course, you must submit an application by the deadline (see Schedule and Calendars for deadlines). A nonrefundable application fee is required with all applications except applications for readmission. There is a $25 late fee for applications submitted after the deadline.

The application fee is waived for permanent UNC-Chapel Hill employees who work 30 or more hours per week. Employees must forward a copy of the tuition waiver form after it has been signed by the Benefits Department, or a copy of their UNC One Card. The late fee is not waived for employees who submit their application after the deadline.

Types of Applicants

New Applicants

You are considered to be a new applicant if you seek to be a part-time student and have never before been enrolled in Part-time Classroom Studies. You are also considered to be a new applicant if you have been enrolled in Part-time Classroom Studies previously but have had a three-year or longer break in your enrollment. In this instance, your academic record will be reviewed in determining your status for admission.

If you are a new applicant who does not have a bachelor’s degree, you are considered to be a new undergraduate applicant. If you do have a four-year bachelor’s degree, you are considered to be a new postbaccalaureate applicant.

You are considered to be a new undergraduate applicant to Part-time Classroom Studies if you are a degree-seeking undergraduate who has left Classroom Studies for at least one semester and taken course work at an institution other than UNC-Chapel Hill during that time. The work done outside UNC will need to be fully reviewed in determining your status for admission.

Readmission Applicants

You are considered to be a readmission applicant to Part-time Classroom Studies if you have been enrolled in Part-time Classroom Studies during the past three years but not during the preceding fall or spring semester. (Degree-seeking undergraduate applicants who have taken courses outside UNC-Chapel Hill, as described above, are an exception to this rule.)

Application Process

The application process varies according to your status:

Teacher Certification applicants—do not use the online application form. Contact the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education for a certification application packet (919-966-1346).

If you claim to be a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes, you must fill out an additional form. See Residence Status for Tuition Purposes.

Once you are admitted as a Part-time Classroom Studies student, you will receive a printed copy of the Student Handbook, which contains the information on this Web site.
